You have all seen and heard those ads in newspapers, internet ads, or radio announcements. Here is the truth about EXTREME jewelry sales. The jewelry is very LOW quality & is marked-up at a HIGH rate in order to "give" you the appearance of a large percetage off the retail price tag.
Quality
Jewelry is composed of 3 ingredients: labor, precious metal and gemstones. Each ingredient has a true market value based on quality, supply & demand. The quality of the jewelry that is traditionally in these extreme sales is mass produced in Asia by unskilled factory workers, not skilled jewelry craftsmen. The metal alloys are of low quality, the workmanship is poor, the jewelry is thin, hollow & structurally unsound, and the diamonds are usually "salt & pepper" quality diamonds (they look like they have salt and pepper in them).
Mark-Up
Jewelry stores (online or traditional) mark-up the jewelry inventory to cover the "cost of doing business" ( Cost of goods sold + Overhead + Marketing + Employess + Taxes) and to create a small profit at the end of the year. In order to sell jewelry at 70% off, a jewelry store would generally have to mark-up their inventory by 600-700% just to cover their cost of doing business.
Think Twice
The jewelry you are considering buying for a "great bargain" is simply "over priced & lacking in quality". Don't fall for these extreme jewelry sales. Most independent stores have a much smaller margin and provide better quality jewelry. An HONEST jewelry sale would advertise items for 10% to 20% off the retail price. At this rate, the jewelry has not been marked-up just to create the mirage of a discounted sale.
