Why does my white gold turn yellow?
Pure gold is naturally yellow. 14k white gold is 58.4% pure gold & 18k gold is 75% pure gold. To make white gold jewerly, manufacturers add nickel or palladium as a whitening alloy. Nickel is cheaper and more widely used, but corrodes and turns yellow over time. So, manufacturers rhodium plate (or, "dip") white gold jewelry to make it look more white, like platinum. Rhodium will eventually wear down and the jewerly will look "off white". Cleaning, polishing, and re-dipping white gold jewerly frequently can help to avoid discoloration. Remove all rings before using any chemicals, soaps, or detergents. Soaps, detergent, home cleaning supplies, polish, chlorine, and cosmetic creams may build up under a ring causing a type of dermatitis. Also, keep jewerly out of swimming pools and hot tubs.
