The 4 C's: COLOR
The quality of a diamond's "color", or tint, is determined by the absence of color. The Gemological Institute of America color grading scale begins with a "D" and ends with "Z". The "D" grading represents "colorless" or as white as possible. Each letter represents a range of color, rather than a specific color.
Always compare two or more diamonds for color. It is impossible for the average consumer to determine color without comparing a diamond to another diamond. Look for color differences from the SIDE and BOTTOM (not the top) of a diamond using a WHITE backgroud. Black backgrounds hide color tints and inclusions. If a store has "funny" sparkling over-head lights (ones that show a spectrum of rainbow colors)...RUN! Those are special "diamond lights" which make a diamond more attractive in appearance by hiding "true" COLOR and CLARITY. The best light source is an Ott-Lite & natural sunlight.
